Cold storage for disaster relief & long outages.
When a storm takes the power out for days, food banks, shelters, churches, relief kitchens and grocers all need the same thing: cold space that keeps running. Our walk-in cooler and freezer trailers are delivered, set up and left in place for as long as the recovery takes, from a family-run Asheville company serving the mountains since 2002.
Built for the long haul, not one night
A failed walk-in at one restaurant is a one-day problem. A regional disaster runs for weeks: donated food arrives in waves, shelters and relief kitchens cook for hundreds, and the power comes back one street at a time. Cold storage has to keep running the whole way through.
Who we set up for
- Food banks and pantries taking in donated perishables faster than their coolers can hold them
- Shelters and relief kitchens cooking for crowds with no working walk-in
- Churches and community centers running food and supply distribution
- County and city teams staging cold supplies for a response
- Grocers and restaurants protecting inventory while they wait on power. Restaurant cold storage →

“Tripp was very professional and the equipment worked flawlessly in our time of need. This company is one I can highly recommend. Very punctual and extremely responsive to all communications. They delivered and picked up exactly when promised.”

Cooler, freezer or both
Each trailer is a walk-in cold room set as a cooler for produce, dairy, drinks and prepared food, or as a freezer that holds frozen product solid. Large relief operations often run one of each, side by side. Freezer trailers → Walk-in cooler trailers →
Power when the grid is down
Our trailers are all-electric: 110-volt units run on a dedicated 20-amp connection and 220-volt units on 30 amps. When there is no grid power, we can refer a generator and help you size it, and when the building comes back online the trailer simply plugs in. No diesel refrigeration unit to keep fueled.
Sized and priced for weeks, not hours
Rentals run by the day, week or month, and the effective daily rate drops as the rental gets longer. Published sizes run from a 6 × 8 at $139 a day to a 6 × 16 at $179 a day, with larger trailers on request. Shelving is available, and you can lock the trailer with your own padlock. Western North Carolina knows what a long outage looks like
Hurricane Helene in 2024 showed every mountain community how long the power can stay off and how quickly perishable food piles up at the places helping people. Cold Storage on Wheels is based in Asheville and has served this region since 2002. When the next storm comes, call early: the sooner we know, the sooner we can schedule.
How to request relief cold storage
Call (828) 713-4303 or send the form with what you are storing, roughly how much, where, for how long, and what power the site has. We will tell you honestly what we can do and when. For a single business whose walk-in has failed, see emergency refrigeration.
